Water Damage
Restoration
Water can be highly destructive, especially if it gets into the undesired parts of your home. Water damage and gradual accumulation lead to several undesirable situations within an indoor environment.
The Institute of International Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) provides a set of practical standards for water mitigation, sewage clean-up, and flood damage repair. According to the IICRC S500, there are 3 primary water damage categories caused by different water damage causes.

Category 1
Water damage is where the water comes from a sanitary or portable source and is fit for human use. The water is not a threat to inhalation, dermal, or ingestion exposure. This water damage typically results from damaged supply lines, sprinkler systems, natural sources like meltwater and rain, or overflowing containers with zero contaminants.
Category 2
Water damage is where the water is significantly contaminated and causes discomfort or illness upon human contact or consumption. The water contains unsafe microorganisms levels or chemical /biological matter such as diluted urine or seepage from ruptured storage tanks.
Category 3
Water damage is where the water is grossly contaminated and has harmful toxigenic and pathogenic agents. The water is by far the deadliest, for example, raw sewage. If sewage damage is not remediated as soon as possible, raw sewage causes a threat to people and property within the area. Raw sewage, or «black water», comes from sanitary sewer backups, flooding seawater, brackish water from streams, and occurrence from natural events such as floods, where heavy metals and harmful chemicals are carried into the building.
It is important to note that ignoring a category 1 water damage can quickly escalate to the dangers posed by a category 3 water damage, for example, the breeding of molds.
